All That Jazz Dance Academy Singapore: Frequently Asked Questions for Parents
Mathew Ward • March 16, 2026
Choosing a dance school for your child is a big decision, and we know parents have lots of questions. At All That Jazz Dance Academy, we want to make the process as clear and stress-free as possible. Here are the answers to the questions we hear most often from families exploring our programmes.
Getting Started at All That Jazz
The best way to start is by booking a trial class. Trial classes give your child a chance to experience the studio, meet the teacher, and try a real class before making any commitment. You can book a trial class directly through our website at allthatjazz.com.sg or by contacting any of our studios. Once you are ready to enrol, our team will guide you through the process, including class selection, scheduling, and uniform requirements. We accept students year-round, so there is no need to wait for a specific intake period.
Class Levels and Placement
Students are placed in classes based on a combination of their birth year and individual ability. For our graded programmes, level placement ensures that your child is training alongside peers of a similar age and skill level, which creates a positive and appropriately challenging learning environment. If your child is new to dance, they will typically start at the beginning of the relevant pathway for their age. Students with prior experience may be assessed by the teacher to determine the most suitable level. Each programme has its own progression system, and our team is always happy to discuss placement options.
Annual Class Upgrades
At All That Jazz, class levels are reviewed and updated once a year, at the end of the calendar year. Students who are ready to progress — based on their teacher's assessment of their development, technique, and readiness — will be upgraded to the next level for the following year. This annual cycle gives students a full year to build strong foundations at each level before moving on, which we believe leads to better long-term development than rushing through grades.
With each upgrade comes a new class schedule. We always do our best to keep a student's day, time, and studio as consistent as possible from year to year. However, this is not always achievable — teacher availability, studio capacity, and the needs of the wider timetable can mean that a student's class slot changes when they move up a level. We understand this can be inconvenient for busy families, and we work hard to minimise disruption wherever we can.
To give families as much notice as possible, updated schedules for the following year are provided by November. So for example, your child's 2027 class schedule will be communicated by November 2026. This lead time is intentional — it gives parents the opportunity to review the new schedule, make any necessary arrangements, and if the proposed slot does not work, to contact our team to explore alternative options. We will always do our best to find a solution that works for your family.
Examinations and Assessments
Most of our programmes include optional or recommended examinations through internationally recognised bodies — ISTD for ballet, ADAPT for jazz and tap, Rambert Grades for contemporary, Trinity College London for musical theatre, ADTA for acro, and RSL for street dance. Examinations give students clear goals, measurable progress, and a sense of achievement. They are typically held once or twice a year, and teachers prepare students thoroughly in the weeks leading up to exam day. For younger students and some programmes, internal assessments are conducted during regular class time, removing the stress of a formal exam while still tracking progress.
Uniforms and What to Wear
All That Jazz has a set dance uniform for each programme and level. Having a consistent uniform helps teachers see students' bodies and alignment clearly, fosters a sense of belonging, and allows students to focus on their dancing rather than their wardrobe. Uniform details are provided when you enrol, and all items are available for purchase through our customer portal or in studio. Dance footwear can be purchased from approved retailers, and All That Jazz students enjoy a discount at select stores.
Recitals and Performances
Our annual recital is the highlight of the year — a professional production held at Mediacorp Theatre where every student, recreational and competitive, gets the chance to perform on stage. Recital participation is a wonderful experience for students, giving them a goal to work toward and the thrill of performing under professional lights. Details about the recital, including costumes, rehearsal schedules, and show times, are communicated well in advance so families can plan ahead.
Practical Information for Parents
We offer a number of features to make life easier for busy families. AutoPay can be set up for monthly fees. If your child misses a class, make-up classes can be booked through our system. An annual pause option is available if your family is travelling or needs a break. And if you need to withdraw from classes, the process is clearly outlined on our FAQ portal at atjfaqs.notion.site. Our WhatsApp support team is available at +65 6974 9928 for any questions not covered in the FAQ guide, and our studio teams are always happy to help in person.
