Contemporary Dance Classes in Singapore: Building Creative, Confident Movers at All That Jazz
Mathew Ward • March 14, 2026
Contemporary dance is one of the most dynamic and evolving art forms in the world today. It is the dominant style for trained dancers globally, and it is a genre that uniquely encourages students to think, create, and express themselves beyond just following choreography. At All That Jazz, our contemporary dance programme is designed to develop strong, confident, and creative movers while nurturing future thinkers and leaders, with lasting benefits that extend well beyond the dance studio.
What Is Contemporary Dance?
Contemporary dance is a constantly evolving art form that draws from all styles of dance — ballet, jazz, street, folk, and even day to day movement. What sets it apart is its focus on intent and concept. Rather than just learning steps, contemporary dancers also explore ideas, express emotions, and create their own movement responses to music, art, and other stimuli. This makes it both physically demanding and intellectually stimulating. You have probably seen contemporary dance in popular culture — from SIA music videos and award-winning TV shows like Dancing With The Stars, to world-renowned companies such as Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures, Nederlands Dans Theatre and the Royal Ballet. It is a genre that rewards creativity, individuality, and authentic expression.
Our Contemporary Dance Programme
All That Jazz is an LCDS-Recognised Training Academy, meaning our programme is officially endorsed by London Contemporary Dance School — one of the most influential contemporary dance education institutions in Europe. Our programme is also supported by Rambert Grades, providing internationally recognised qualifications regulated by Ofqual in the UK. There are three training strands within our contemporary programme to ensure a holistic, well-rounded approach. The Technical Strand builds strength, coordination, and safe movement practices through structured exercises. The Performance Strand exposes students to professional repertoire from renowned choreographers such as Matthew Bourne, Hofesh Shechter, and ZooNation. The Creative Strand nurtures creativity and critical thinking skills through guided improvisational tasks.
Why Contemporary Dance Matters for Your Child
In a world that increasingly values creativity, adaptability, and independent thinking, contemporary dance gives students a real advantage. Academic skills alone are not enough to prepare children for the future. Contemporary dance uniquely encourages students to ideate, explore, and think outside the box. Students build strength and coordination through technical exercises, while creative tasks nurture creativity, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate ideas through movement. These are transferable skills that benefit students in school, social situations, and eventually in their careers.
Examinations and Pathways
Rambert Grade exams are scheduled for May and June each year. They are inclusive, adaptive, and designed to build confidence. Students can attain Pass, Merit, Distinction, or Distinction*grades. At Grades 6, 7, and 8, students earn UCAS points — which can support university applications in the UK, making contemporary dance not just an art form but a genuine academic pathway. For students with professional aspirations, our partnership with London Contemporary Dance School provides direct admission pathways into their tertiary programmes in London. This is an exclusive opportunity available to eligible All That Jazz students.
Complementing School Programmes
Our contemporary dance programme is also particularly well suited for students involved in school dance clubs, preparing for Direct School Admissions (DSA), or studying dance at A Level or IB level. Most school dance programmes are based around contemporary and modern dance, so our classes provide ideal preparation and ongoing support. For students studying A Level or IB Dance, our programme complements their academic work by exploring concepts practically — giving students hands-on experience to strengthen the practical component of their assessments.
